Effect of Chilling Treatments on Growth and Flowering of Cypripedium macranthum Sw. Native to Korea

Abstract
Native Cypripeadum macranthum were subjected to flowering by forcing culture using several methods of chilling treatment. New shoot growth and development from mother bulb greatly depended on time of chilling treatment. Shoot emergence and growth was favored by delaying treatment until Sep. 26 and by extending growth period. Plants receiving chilling treatment earlier than Sep. 26 showed poor growth and failed to flower. New shoot emergence and flowering was hastened by extending the duration of chilling treatment at 0¡É or 4¡É. Maximun growth and flowering was achieved with 50 days of chilling treatment at 4¡É. Plants that were transferred to greenhouse after natural chilling. treatment in open field until Dec. 24 exhibited poor shoot growth and did not flower. Natural chilling treatment in open field until Jan. 24 and Feb. 24, on the other hand, promoted growth and flowering.
